Maria Savina is remembered as a central persona of the Petersburg stage at the end of the nineteenth century. After starting out in provincial variety theatre, she found her way to the center stage of Russian cultural life. Her career was triumphant and rich in encounters and collaborations with the most important artistic figures of the day: I. S. Turgenev, who was passionately infatuated with her; A.N. Ostrovskii; A.P. Chekhov, Vera Komissarzhevskaia; and many others.
