Berberova writes that this was the first time she saw Andrey Bely, who, along with Pyast and Zamiatin, “were carrying the coffin high on their shoulders, and descended to the sound of loud choir-singing (which always burst out so powerfully from Russian apartments onto the staircases during the bearing–out; the choir followed the deceased, modulating and droning on, as if rejoicing that finally the corpse had rushed out of his dwelling and was now floating in the air, feet first).”
